One of Michael’s greatest gifts – and his deepest passion – is writing music, and he has been honored to create commissioned works from several organizations and individuals. While writing for advanced performers allows his creative energy to move fluidly and unrestrained, Michael also enjoys the challenge of writing for beginners. He has a wealth of experience composing and arranging choral, handbell and orchestral music, and several works are currently in progress. A few completed commissions include:

Blackbird, choral arrangement (SAT) of the Beatles’ classic, with piano accompaniment. Commissioned in 2008 by Ravenscroft School (Raleigh, NC) for its Baccalaureate Senior Choir; Dr. Marilee Vana, director.

Decade, original handbell work. Commissioned in 2009 by the New England Ringers (Boston, MA); Edward G. Henderson, Jr., director.

Five, Six, Seven, Eight!, original handbell work. Commissioned in 2009 by the Stow Heritage Ringers (Stow, OH); Sherri L. Stoffer, director.

Pilgrimage, original handbell work with optional trombone duo. Commissioned in 2009 by John Maas (Salem, OR), in celebration of his wife Judy and their 40 years of marriage. Collaborative composition with colleague Tim Waugh.

Sempiternam, original handbell work. Commissioned in 2008 by Bells of the Sound (Seattle, WA) in celebration of the group's 20th anniversary; Shirley Lindberg, director.

Tremors (With Fear and Trembling Stand), original handbell work. Commissioned in 2005 by Bellissimo of Redlands Adventist Academy (Redlands, CA); James R. Walters, director.

For some reason, the commissioning process seems intimidating and overwhelming to many, but it’s quite simple. Any person or organization can commission a piece of music! All it takes to get started is an e-mail to Michael explaining what you’re looking for. Commissions are fantastic ways to honor special people, commemorate milestones and anniversaries, and remember loved ones. Michael works closely with each client throughout the creative process to ensure that the final work is something they are both thrilled with and proud of.
